Celebrate National Plan for Vacation Day with The Merrill Hotel January 27, 2020

As part of National Plan for Vacation on January 28, The Merrill Hotel, Muscatine, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel is celebrating Iowa tourism by kicking off our Spring Fling Getaway.

More than half of American workers (55%) failed to use all their time off last year. That's a stockpile of 768 million unused vacation days just in 2018, of which 236 million were forfeited completely.

What's the key to using more vacation time? Planning. But nearly half of American households (46%) don't do this simple step—and they lose out on their time off and the benefits it brings.

"The beginning of the year is the time to pull out the calendar and start planning for the entire year. Before you know it, life happens, and you may find yourself in November with weeks left to use and simply not enough time left in the year to schedule them," said Roger Dow, president and CEO of U.S. Travel Association, the organization rallying the industry around this nationwide event. "National Plan for Vacation Day is the perfect reminder for Americans to plan to use those well-earned days off to explore this great nation. From the beaches of Puerto Rico to the Montana mountain tops, America truly has something for every travel style and budget."

Using vacation days to travel could also improve the U.S. economy, create American jobs and have a positive impact on our health and overall well-being. In fact, if Americans used all their time off to travel, our economy could see a boost of $151.5 billion in travel spending and an additional 2 million U.S. jobs.

"The Merrill Hotel is celebrating National Plan for Vacation Day to encourage Americans to take their well-deserved time off," said Lee Belfield, general manager at The Merrill Hotel. "And what better way to take a day than to travel? By committing to planning on January 28, Americans can all enjoy the many benefits of taking a break while giving themselves something to look forward to—and The Merrill Hotel has some great ideas to help you plan your perfect getaway."

Travelers will enjoy more of those vacation days in Muscatine while they shop, play, dine, and stay longer with the Spring Fling Getaway. 2-Night stays are 15% off for stays March 12th through April 12th, 2020. Guests can enjoy the walkability of downtown Muscatine and the comfortable luxury of The Merrill Hotel, voted #1 hotel in Iowa by U.S. News & World Report.

To help employees get their vacation days on the calendar, U.S. Travel Association has created a Vacation Planning Tool. By simply entering the number of days off they earn, users can plot out their trips or vacations for the year, export to their work or personal calendar and share with their friends, family and co-workers.

National Plan for Vacation Day takes place during the last Tuesday in January as a day to encourage Americans to plan their vacation days for the rest of the year at the start of the year.

By Margaret Stadtwald | Discover Muscatine

Throughout the month of October, businesses across Muscatine participated in Paint the Town Pink, a campaign to support those fighting breast cancer. The Merrill Hotel (the Merrill) decided they wanted to participate. "It started with Paint the Town Pink and it evolved for us, explained R. Lee Belfield, General Manager of the Merrill. "One of our employees had a connection with Pink Heals, [so] we did a display and we had a drink in Maxwell's where the proceeds [went to Pink Heals]."

Along with their, "Pink Ta Ta Tini," which raised $1 for Pink Heals for each cocktail sold, employees at the Merrill held jeans days and other fundraisers to raise even more money. In the end, the employees and guests of the Merrill brought in more than $300 for Pink Heals. Working out to about a $5 donation from each employee, Belfield felt their fundraising for Pink Heals proved a success. "I'm touched! Personally touched . . . by the outpouring," he shared. "I'm proud of the staff. They put in a lot of effort to make this happen."

The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center achieves AAA Four Diamond Rating

The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center | Tim Marleau

Muscatine, IA - The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center is busy building a stellar reputation and its recent AAA Four Diamond rating achievement further supports that this hotel is a premier lodging destination in the state of Iowa.

AAA has put forth a strict set of guidelines for hotels in the areas of services, facility, and amenities. Hotels must meet AAA's requirements in these areas during an unannounced, on-site inspection in order to receive the AAA inspected and approved designation. Since 1998, only five other hotels in the state have met the necessary requirements to receive this prestigious nomination; and now, The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center is the sixth, beating out all properties visited by AAA in the capital city of Des Moines.

The Four Diamond rating represents a combination of the overall quality, range of facilities, and level of services offered at the property. More specifically, Four Diamond is a reflection of refined, stylish décor with upscale physical attributes, extensive amenities, and a high degree of hospitality, service, and attention to detail. This designation, along with being an IACC (International Association of Conference Centers) certified venue, makes The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center the only Iowa based hotel to offer this combination.

The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center operates under an incredibly high level of standards and this designation by AAA is quite an accomplishment for the property which has only been open since March.

Sino-US friendship has strong roots in Muscatine, Iowa April 3, 2017

Xinhua | ChinaDaily.com.cn

CHICAGO - In the hinterland of the United States and on the upper reaches of the Mississippi River lies a small city -- Muscatine. It may be unknown to many Americans, but it has become a household name in China thanks to its special connection with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"FRIENDSHIP IS BIG BUSINESS"

In 1985, Xi, then party secretary of Zhengding county in China's northern province of Hebei, led a five-person delegation to Muscatine in the state of Iowa and stayed with a local family for two days.

Muscatine did not come into the spotlight until Xi, who was so impressed with the hospitality of the local residents, returned to this small city to meet his old friends during his US visit in 2012 as Chinese vice president.

After that, Muscatine and Zhengding became sister cities in 2013, with flourishing cultural and education exchanges between Muscatine and China.
